How do you get the cheapest tickets to Siena ?
Known for its world-famous Palio, a horserace around the Piazza Il Campo, Siena is perhaps the most charming medieval town in Italy with its welcoming locals and lovely cafes. When you enter the walled city, it feels like you’ve gone through a time machine or stepped into a period film, allowing you to take a break from modernity. Take a couple of hours to walk around town and soak up the beautiful architecture with your eyes, or picnic in the piazza with friends and family, or enjoy a nice leisurely lunch at one of the many bistros around the city.
A large part of Siena’s beauty is its small size, and so no matter where you stay, you will have the pleasure of getting the complete experience of the town. The piazza is located at the center of Siena and is used as a point of orientation. A charming attribute of the city’s meandering streets is being able to take long strolls that allow you to discover aspects of Siena that seem hidden and out-of-the-way, only for you to end up back at either the piazza or the actual point of your departure. With café and gelato shops at every turn, exploring the city is tasty and fun!
Virtually untouched by modernity, Siena’s architecture is not the only thing rooted in history and tradition. The Palio is not just a horserace; it is a historical competition between contrade, or neighborhoods, for renown. All Sienese belong to one of seventeen contrade toward which they feel loyalty and pride and twice a year, each contrada gets a shot at victory and city-wide respect during The Palio. It is easy and thrilling to get swept up in the excitement and pride of whichever contrada you happen to be staying at during your Siena vacation and it is fun to learn which animal your contrada is named after, such as “The Tortoise” contrada or “Little Owl” contrada.
However, there is a lot to see and experience outside of The Palio. Not one for the claustrophobic or for those fearful of heights, the Torre del Mangia, a 270-foot bell tower overlooking the Piazza del Campo, is a popular attraction for tourists. The panoramic view of the entire city and the hills surrounding it is gorgeous and well worth the 300-step hike to the top. Of course, the views provided by the Duomo, Siena’s black-and-white Romanesque cathedral, rival those of the Torre del Mangia while also offering beautiful art including “The Feast of Herod” by Donatello. Only a couple of blocks away from the Duomo is the house where 14th century patron saint of Siena, St. Catherine, was born.
To continue your cultural and historical education, you can always visit the Museo Civico, which is Siena’s most famous museum, which contains frescoes by many artists, particularly Simone Martini’s “Virgin Mary in Majesty.”
So if you’re planning on vacationing in Tuscany, be sure to stop by Siena for at least a couple of days and walk through the hilly city and enjoy its simple but rich charms and attractions.
