Search cheapest vacation in Toulon
Though a large military harbor on the Mediterranean coast and home to a major naval base, Toulon is a gorgeous port town with even more beautiful warm weather. It is also a city of culture; next to its terrace cafes and squares and passages, the area has many museums like the Museum of Asian Arts in Mourillon. Here you can find a collection of art objects mostly donated by naval officers from when the French colonized Southeast Asia. There is also the Museum of the French Navy on Place Monsenergue, which best displays the French’s admiration for the sea.
One of the best places to visit in Toulon is the seaside neighborhood of Le Mourillon. There, you will find three man-made beaches often enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. Plage u Lido, Plage de la Source and Plage des Pins, which are a series of three sheltered bays, make it the perfect place to spend a sunny day swimming, relaxing or sunbathing. For those who are hikers, walkers, or keen naturalists, there is a beautiful eastward walk from Plage des Pins along the coastal path. Bed and breakfasts and vacation rentals are less than a mile away from the beaches, ideal for family vacations.
Toulon can be divided up in two parts, the Historical Center and the New Town. The Historical Center, called Vielle Ville or Old Town, was constructed in the Middle Ages and is located at the lowest point of Toulon. This part of the city is characterized by its small intricate streets while a few of the wider ones, such as the Algiers and Lafayette Streets, are crowded on weekends and feature plenty of shops.
The harbor is a nice feature of the Historic Center and hosts many souvenir shops, cafes and fish restaurants. On the port square stands the Spirit of Navigation statue pointing at the sea, the locals have dubbed it “cul vers ville” because the statue’s buttocks are turned toward the city. Between the harbor and the south of Cours Lafayette, there is a beautiful baroque church built in the 18th century called Saint Francois de Paul church. Like many French towns, you will also find a fountain in The Historical Center, particularly in the more ancient area, called Place Puget, which was built in 1780 and features three dolphins now completely covered in ivy.
In contrast to the Historical Center, the ‘newer’ part of Toulon is aptly named Haute Ville, or High Town, because it’s built in a higher part of Toulon. The main square is called Place de la Liberte and features a beautiful fountain where, in winter, a skating rink is constructed for children. Many of the museums are located in New Town, such as the Navy Museum, which displays collections about the naval history of Toulon as well as the Boat Museum, which was actually used for the transportation of tanks before becoming a museum.
