Although the Polish capital might not be on the top of your list of places to go, as soon as you set foot in the city you’ll wonder what took you so long to book your Warsaw vacation. Although it is often associated with WWII, this vibrant city is a wonderful mix of historic charm and modern vibrancy that has dozens of fantastic attractions for you to explore. No matter where you choose to stay on your Warsaw vacation, you are guaranteed an unforgettable trip. The historic Old Town is most likely where you’ll be spending the majority of your time; it is home to most of the major historic sites, including the royal route, as well as numerous wonderful restaurants and shops all within walking distance of each other. The green Zoliborz neighborhood is the perfect place to spend a sunny day; having suffered less damage than the rest of the city during the war it still has some beautifully preserved architecture. Warsaw has several neighborhoods that are sure to leave you breathless.
Forget the city’s dark recent history and begin your Warsaw vacation by immersing yourself in the city’s regal past in the Old Town. The historic center was completely destroyed during the Second World War, but rebuilt as faithfully to the original as possible during the following decade. The result is a stunning mix of Renaissance, Baroque and Gothic buildings, which contain whatever remnants could be salvaged from the original structures. You can stroll around and admire the architecture or relax at one of the many outdoor cafes and restaurants that line the square to soak up the atmosphere. The Historical Museum of Warsaw in the Old Town is definitely worth a visit, as is the Royal Palace; another restored yet dazzling building.
If you’re curious about the city’s history during the war, the Warsaw Rising Museum poignantly expresses the horrors and deprivations Warsaw’s citizens faced during WWII. Housed in a restored building in the former ghetto, the museum features several exhibits spread over three floors that chronicle this tragic chapter in history. Be sure to visit the Ghetto Heroes Monument to pay your respects to the thousands of Warsaw’s citizens who lost their lives during the famed Ghetto Uprising of 1943.
Warsaw is full of other great diversions for enjoying the present; the nightlife here is legendary and you’ll have no shortage of fantastic venues to choose from. Clubs and bars range in everything from chic hotspots to student hangouts to fun dives, and you can spend every night of your Warsaw vacation in a different one. The coffee culture is alive and well in the city; you can spend countless quiet afternoons in old-fashioned coffee and tea houses as you sip your beverage of choice and chat with friends and locals for hours.
