Search cheapest vacation in Zagreb
Vacationers tend to think of Croatia an equivalent of Italy; lots of sun, sand and relaxation on the Mediterranean. In reality, the country has its own incredible history and culture that make it entirely unique. If you want to learn about medieval legends, admire Hapsburg architecture or just take advantage of the best museums and music scene in the entire country, a Zagreb vacation is perfect for you. With its castles, music festivals and delicious local cuisine, the capital is the ideal destination for visitors who want an authentic experience without the crowds of tourists.
If you chose a Zagreb vacation wanting to learn as much as possible about the city’s history, you should choose to stay in the Upper Town district. The city is unique in that its historical area does not make up its downtown center; if you want to be in the hub of Zagreb’s activity stay near Ban Jelacic Square. This lovely square is in the pedestrian zone of the city and free of cars, so you’ll be able to wander around and admire the architecture on foot or pass the time in one of its charming cafes at your own leisurely pace.
Although many sightseers choose to bypass the capital in favor of the Croatian cities on the coast like Split, a Zagreb vacation offers some amazing attractions you won’t find anywhere else in the country. It may not have beaches, but is an important center of music, history and culture.
Zagreb’s history stretches back to the early Middle Ages, and there are remnants of its medieval origins throughout the city. If you wander through St. Mark’s Square you might even happen upon the famous knights of the Order of the Silver Dragon. Members of the order are dedicated to promoting chivalry, medieval history, and Croatian traditions; watching them reenact famous battles decked out in their authentic replicas of medieval armor is a fun way to learn about the past the whole family can enjoy.
Besides its modern knights, Zagreb is famous for its large number of fantastic museums. The Archaeological Museum should be a stop on everyone’s list; it features thousands of artifacts from all eras of history, including the famous Zagreb mummy. If you want to learn more about the city specifically, visit the Museum of the City of Zagreb. Housed in a former convent, this unique museum tells the capital’s story starting back in the time of the Roman’s to the present day. The gorgeous Art Pavilion downtown is worth a visit just to admire the stunning architecture of the building, although it is also home to some fantastic painting exhibitions. If you want a less-traditional historical excursion, check out the Museum of Broken Relationships. What started out as a collection of personal items left over from break-ups quickly developed into one of Europe’s most invocative museums; today you can explore the remnants of these burned-out romances and even record your own memories to add to the exhibit in the confessional.
