Travel to Seville

Located in the Andalusia region of Spain, Sevilla is a city that is filled with a majesty of architectural wonders that won’t let you easily break of your gaze.

The Old Town of this community is one of the largest in all of Europe, offering visitors over 4 square kilometers to explore on their own or with a guided tour. Sevilla is also the only river port in all of Spain, sitting about 80 kilometers inland from the Atlantic Ocean.

Are you ready to experience the essential Sevilla today? Then here is what you’re going to want to plan on doing during your upcoming visit!

There Are Three World Heritage Sites in Sevilla

Sevilla’s Old Town is home to three stunning sites: the Alcazar palace, the Cathedral, and the General Archive of the Indies. Your journey here starts with the palace complex, which is the oldest royal palace that is still in use. The Courtyard of the Maidens is beyond stunning and the intricate craftsmanship of the interior testifies to the skill of those who built this complex.

The Cathedral, which is dedicated to Sainy Mary of the See, is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and one of the Top 3 largest churches in the world as well. It was completed in the 16th century and the entire purpose of the grandeur of the building was to show off the city’s great wealth at the time. According to traditional tales, the members of the local chapter said they should build such a grand, beautiful church that anyone who saw it would believe they were crazy. And that’s exactly what they did!

The General Archive can be found in the old merchant’s exchange and is a repository of many valuable archival documents that show the history of the Spanish Empire as it spread into the Americas and the Philippines. The building is influenced by Renaissance Architecture and the interior houses over 9 kilometers of shelving for the 80 million pages that it stores.

Nothing May Be As Gorgeous As the Plaza de Espana

The panoramic views of the Plaza de Espana are expansive and breathtaking. There’s a central fountain and the primary building of the plaza is one of the best examples of the Renaissance Revival period of Spain. It was built for the Exposition of 1929 and even though it consists primarily of government buildings, there is Maria Luisa Park to enjoy down at the plaza

Sevilla also has a number of great museums to enjoy, but the most important may be the art collection at the Museum of Fine Arts. This museum was established in 1835 and has many of the masterpieces that were created by Pacheco, Murillio, and Zurbaran. There are also some Flemish paintings in the collection in this building that was a converted convent.

Sevilla has a number of exciting opportunities for exploration, so many that you could fill up more than one holiday in this community and still never come close to seeing them all! If your plans have you coming to Sevilla in the near future, then include these ideas to get started on your own unique journey in this historical city.

Puente de Triana

The Puente de Triana or Triana Bridge is a spot which you should not miss while being in Seville. This bridge is located over the Guadalquivir River and is very interesting due to its construction as well as to the where it leads, the neighborhood of Triana which is a very charming area, full of narrow streets and antique houses.

A closer look at La Macarena

La Macarena is a typical Spanish neighborhood, full of traditional spots and characteristics which turn it into a very attractive place for tourists. This neighborhood is located towards the northern area of Sevilla, one of the most attractive regions of the country.

One of the most interesting things to see in La Macarena is the Old Walls. The Old Walls of La Macarena date from as long ago as the year 1136 and, until the XIX century, they would surround the entire city turning Sevilla into a fortified town. Nowadays just a part of these walls remain unchanged and they are an iconic spot of the town.

Near by the Old Walls, there is another interesting attraction in this neighborhood: La Macarena de la Esperanza. La Macarena de la Esperanza is one of the main religious icons of Sevilla. Near the Macarena de la Esperanza there also are several churches and other religious constructions which could be very interesting not only to those attracted by the religion but also to those who enjoy observing buildings from an architectonic point of view.

La Alameda is another one of the main attractions this neighborhood offers its visitors and is one of the central spots of the area, surrounded by many restaurants, shops, pubs and discos among others. The Alameda, built in 1575, is a popular area surrounded by trees and showing some unique Roman columns along with statues of Hercules and Caesar.

The Monasterio de San Clemente is one of the main spots visitors who enjoy interesting constructions or antique art works should meet since it exhibits different pieces such as frescoes from the XVI century. Also, the Iglesia de San Marcos or San Marcos Church should not be missed since it shows a unique appearance and a typical Gothic style can be observed in it. The Convento de Santa Paula is another antique construction you can see in La Macarena, and even visit its interior since, most of the times, it opens its doors to those who wish to enter.

Real Alcázar

This enchanting building was a fortress from the Muslim-era and later changed hands to become the home of Christian royalty for many centuries. Today the gardens, tapestries and varied architecture remain some of Seville ’s most appealing treasures.

Plaza de España

A truly spectacular plaza, equal with any in the country. It was the centrepiece of the 1929 Spanish-Americas Fair and is an arc of tiled glory and historic handwork. Across the tree-lined road from the plaza is the enchanting Parque de María.

Cathedral and the Giralda

The cathedral is the largest Gothic building in the world and the pride of Seville. The emblem of Seville is the Giralda, the weathercock that sits atop the Cathedral. You can climb the Giralda, which is in the form of a woman representing Faith, for spectacular city views.

Casa de Pilatos

Also make sure you see the Casa de Pilatos, built by the first Marquis de Tarifa in the early sixteenth century. It is one of the finest palaces in Seville and now also houses a courtyard and park, at the end of which are mansions that have been turned into museums.

Barrio Santa Cruz

For a real taste of Seville, spend some time in the Barrio Santa Cruz, one of the most picturesque parts of the city, full of narrow lanes and surprising squares; whitewashed houses and excellent tapas bars.
