Skellefteå is a small community in Sweden that offers visitors the chance to have a big adventure. It’s a community that has always had mining as the forefront of their industry, which is why it carries the nickname of “Gold Town.” It is believed that people have settled in this area for over 1,000 years, but the modern town dates to about 1845.

The current church dates back to 1800, but the church itself was originally built in the year 1507. Inside the church you’ll find a wooden Madonna that was believed to have been carved in the 1400’s. There’s a tithe storehouse next to the church that was built in 1674.

Round out your adventure with a visit to the Bergrum Boliden, which is just a short trip from Skellefteå. It’s a museum that focuses on the gold mining that brought the area to prominence and is a great way to get to know the local culture. With exhibits on geology and mining, the time it takes to get here is a good investment!
