Transport, Getting There And Getting Around

Discover Split

The historic old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to many significant landmarks for you to discover at your leisure. When you book a flight to Split, though, you won’t just be getting access to the city, you’ll also be close to some of Croatia’s other top holiday destinations.

Split is a fantastic city for culture vultures to visit, as there are so many attractions relating to the city’s heritage. The most important of these is the Diocletian’s Palace, the ruins of which are scattered around in the old town district. This amazing structure dates from between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, with Silver Gate (Porta orientalis), the Vestibul and the Temple of Jupiter among the most stunning of the remains. As you wander along the narrow streets and alleys you’ll come across many more outstanding buildings that all have a story to tell.

Another spot not to miss is Marjan Hill, which has three peaks that each offer a slightly different viewpoint from where to look over Split or along the Adriatic coastline. The hill is forested and has been made a nature preserve, ensuring there’s always a peaceful green space in the heart of the city.

The surroundings

When you get on a flight to Split you can look forward to seeing more than just one city, as there are numerous attractions within easy reach that are well worth visiting.

Brac Island – There are several islands just near Split, although Brac is a particularly lovely example. Its interior is planted with vineyards and olive groves, while along its coast are some truly beautiful beaches. Bol, in the south, boasts one of these, with its stretch of white sand at Zlatni rat jutting out into the blue sea for about half a kilometre.

Makarska Riviera – South of Split is the Makarska Riviera, which spans some 60 km and is peppered with peaceful seaside resorts and interesting towns. Among them is Baska Voda, which is said to be one of the most beautiful villages on the Adriatic. The pebbled beaches here are the perfect places to relax in the sun. Other resorts on this strip of coast include Makarska and Tucepi.

Sibenik – Sibenik is located to the north of Split and is one of the oldest towns in the region having first been mentioned in 1066. Its cathedral is UNESCO protected, while there are many other churches and monasteries in the town that are worth exploring. Sibenik is also close to two of Croatia’s stunning national parks – Krka and Kornati.
