The Old Town of Steyr may be one of the best in all of Austria. The main square offers several buildings from various time periods, offering glimpses that go as far back as the 13th century. One of the town’s primary landmarks, the Bummerlhaus, is one of the best-preserved Gothic buildings that can be found in all of Austria.
There are a couple of castles to find during your stay in Steyr as well. Castle Lamberg may be the most famous, with the castle first appearing in documents in the 10th century. The inner courtyard has several sandstone sculptures that are quite precious indeed. If you can grab a guide, you’ll want to visit the old library at the castle as well.
One of the best activities offered in Steyr is the Night Watchman tour. Dressed in traditional garb, the night watchman will take you on a tour of the city, by lantern light only, to tell various stories of days gone by within the city. You then end the tour at the church spire. Plan ahead for the tour, as it is only held on Thursdays and Sundays.
