Stradbroke Island – Straddie as it’s locally known – is just southeast of Brisbane in Queensland and is the world’s second largest sand island. Its main industries are tourism and sand mining, and there’s only a couple of thousand people who live on it, some of them Aboriginal. There are two Stradbroke islands, north and south, and they once formed one landmass.
A storm in 1896 separated the two and most of the tourism is on the more populated north island. South Stradbroke is mainly rainforest and wetland, while North Stradbroke has a developed tourism industry that attracts many people for a relaxing beach holiday.
There are many resorts around North Stradbroke, some luxurious and others simple cabins by the sea for a perfect fishing and snorkelling holiday with the family. The main areas are the three small towns: Point Lookout, Dunwich and Amity Point. You can even watch whales from your Stradbroke Island accommodation, at Samarinda Drive in Point Lookout.
You can also stay on South Stradbroke Island, including in eco cabins surrounded by stunning natural beauty. Couran Cove on the south island is a good place to stay if you’re after a waterfront villa holiday, and apartments are also available in the area.
Stradbroke Island – the collective name for the north and south islands – is rightly billed as nature’s perfect wonderland. With excellent transport links, and only an hour from Brisbane International Airport, it offers the chance to get away from it all by not really going that far at all.
