Tabanan is a town located in central Bali and is the capital town of the regency of Bali. Southern coastal areas were previously not well-known by visitors because of a lack of infrastructure, but with light development in recent years there are now some high profile accommodation options to choose from. Tabanan is usually associated with rolling green landscapes, hills and especially the imposing Mount Batukaru, Bali’s second highest peak but there is a whole other side to Tabanan just waiting for you to discover it.

What to see and do in Tabanan ?
The popular dry season, referred to as ‘summer’ by the locals even though it is the southern hemisphere, is cooler and much more pleasant. The best time to visit is during this season from April to October.
A great day out for the whole family is to the Bali butterfly park, it is a small but well maintained centre for research and education into butterflies with some very spectacular species on show. A hot tip is to visit in the early and mid morning when the butterflies are at their most active.
Batukaru Temple or Pura Luhur Batukaru to the locals is one of Bali’s key directional temples and a site of pilgrimage for Hindu Balinese. It has sat on the slopes of Mount Batukaru since the 11th century.
There are numerous small roads and unmade tracks that lead from the coast road south of Tabanan to the waterfront and the beaches here are all black sand. Be warned though that much of this west coast shoreline is unsafe for swimming. Don’t forget to visit the Sangeh Monkey forest, legend has it that these monkeys are descendents of the army assembled by the monkey king Hanuman and that the forest here is a fragment of Mount Meru that fell to earth.
Have your chance to get fresh roasted coffee beans from the surrounding coffee plantations, which can also be found at the Tabanan night markets. Most of the hotels and resorts have their own restaurants but you do have the option of heading into town for a fantastic meal.
Those visitors who especially enjoy mountain views should stop for an afternoon break and perhaps a cup of coffee on the scenic drive from Antosari to Pupuan. The beach resorts at Yeh Gangga are a great spot to enjoy a sunset cocktail.
