Best of Tauranga

What to see and do in Tauranga ?

Nestled in the Bay of Plenty on the north-eastern coast of New Zealand’s North Island, Tauranga is one of the country’s main resort areas. The city is known for its good weather, great beaches and excellent surfing. Tauranga is Maori for ‘a sheltered anchorage’ and it’s that shelter that gives the area a relatively dry and warm climate. It’s a popular stop-off point for cruise liners, anchoring at the busy Port of Tauranga, one of the largest ports in the country. Tauranga is one of the most dynamic cities in New Zealand, and has become a major business, culture and fashion centre.

Hotels in Tauranga are located in the central areas of the city, which is a good location for visitors as they have access to the facilities and services of a modern urban area. Further out from the city centre is where several motels are located, and these especially can be a good Tauranga accommodation choice for those who are travelling with children. The Tauranga suburb of Bethlehem is another good option for accommodation, as there’s a selection of hotels, inns and lodges there. Many visitors head to nearby Mount Maunganui and its wide accommodation choices as a place to stay.

Tauranga offers visitors a dream holiday in New Zealand, set amid glorious beaches and stunning natural surroundings that make this wonderful place one of the most popular destinations in the entire country. It’s a trip to savour and one that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Many people come to Tauranga for its beautiful beaches, and there are lots of them. Among the best are Waihi Beach, which is also popular for beginner surfers; Tay Street, and just offshore is a manmade surfing reef; and the very expansive Papamoa Beach, which stretches 20 kilometres along the coast.

Off the coast of Tauranga is an active volcano, White Island, and authorised tour operators run trips for visitors. The island is an important breeding area for thousands of Australasian Gannets, and at one time was a sulphur mine.

If you’d like to totally immerse yourself in the area’s culture, and you certainly should, a local organisation, Tauranga Moana Maori Tourism, promotes the culture and heritage of the Maori people, and will advise on the best places to go.

Learn to fly a gyroplane and see the area from on high. There’s a gyroplane school at Tauranga Airport where visitors can take to the air in these miniature helicopters – no licence required, only nerves of steel.

Due to the volcanic nature of the environment, Tauranga has a lot of hot springs and pools. Some are public while others are private. Either way, take a relaxing, therapeutic dip.

Museums in the area include those showcasing the region’s heritage as well as military past, while another deals with classic airplanes and yet another recounts the history of local surfing.

Tauranga Art Gallery is the main gallery in the city and only opened in 2007, in a large building covering two levels. There are a number of visitor programmes at the gallery, which features historical as well as contemporary works.

If you’re looking for a good night out in Tauranga, you’re in luck. There’s a great choice of restaurants and bars all over the city where you can dine in style and then party the night away.
