Travel to Tavewa Island

Just three kilometres long and one kilometre wide, Tavewa is part of the Yasawa chain of some 20 volcanic islands in the west of Fiji. There are a number of resorts on the island, which visitors get to by boat. There are no vehicles, or electricity; the resorts have their own generators. The island’s stunning beauty and raw and unspoiled nature has seen several Hollywood movies shot there in recent years. The dry season is from May to October, which is the best time to go in order to avoid the annual rains. The tropical maritime climate means temperatures average around 25°C and above throughout the year, with high humidity.
Tavewa may be relatively underdeveloped, but for many visitors that’s precisely the reason to go there. Making it even more of a remote tourist idyll is that there are only a few small resorts on the island, so it’s not going to be crowded with people during guests’ stay. The resorts are in the beach areas, giving guests that famous Fijian holiday experience. Such basics of accommodation, such as running hot water, may not be available at the island’s resorts, and the electricity supply is turned off late at night-time, so if you’re still up you’ll need to have a torch.

What to see and do in Tavewa Island ?
Tavewa lets visitors see what the real, unblemished Fiji was long before mass developments sprung up on the large islands and elsewhere during the tourism boom. It’s almost a step back in time, to a more innocent existence, yet for guests, one not entirely without its comforts and little luxuries.
The glorious white-sand beaches are the hallmark of the resorts on the island, giving guests the kind of untarnished paradise holiday that is the stuff of dreams. On this island, rates for accommodation are generally lower than in other tourism places in the country, making stays all the more affordable.
As with islands right around Fiji, scuba diving in the warm waters off Tavewa is excellent, and there is a dive centre on the island. For visitors who don’t know how to scuba dive but would like to learn, lessons are available from qualified instructors. Fiji’s waters are home to an abundance of fish and coral, and a view below the waves should not be missed.
For those not up to going down, snorkelling just offshore allows a peek at the glorious marine life below. On several days of the week, some resorts organise trips where guests can snorkel with sharks.
Fishing is another popular activity on Tavewa, and guests can go out on organised trips – and see if they can catch something for their dinner.
Various day trips are available and include visiting limestone caves in the area, taking a boat and seeing the other small islands along the Yasawa chain, exploring a traditional Fijian village and seeing how the local people live as they used to centuries ago, and going on a magical sunset cruise.
Guests can get a flavour of Fijian culture by taking part in a traditional kava ceremony and finding out for themselves just how potent – and communally bonding – the kava drink is.
Have one of those famous Fijian massages to really relax you, or take some Pacific dance lessons so you can impress your friends when you get back home. If you want to do nothing else but laze about, slip into a beach hammock and let your troubles just melt away.
Fire dancing is a speciality of Fiji and in the evenings performances are staged and you can marvel at the spectacular display. At night, dinner at tables set out on the beach is a great way to end the day, as you tuck into fresh seafood and feel the soft sand beneath your feet.
