Travel to Te Anau

Read about and get inspiration for a trip to the city, check for the cheapest flights and hotels in Te Anau

Te Anau’s famous fjords are a primary reason why people travel from all over to this scenic town in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island. Lying on the edge of the stunning Lake Te Anau, it is an area of extraordinary and almost otherworldly natural beauty. Te Anau is on the border of the Fiordland National Park, which makes up a large part of the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site that runs along the southwest side of the island. The climate is cool and temperate with summertime highs of around 20°C while winter lows hover near zero. That makes the summer months, from November to February, the best time to go sightseeing in this magical place.

Most of the Te Anau accommodation in the resort town is clustered together in the central town area. However, there is some accommodation further out, including lodges and chalets. For many people, a spot by Lake Te Anau is the perfect location during their trip, and many places are located on its edge and have stunning vistas over the waters and further to the fjords. Various holiday parks scattered about provide a more open-space place to base yourself during your stay in Te Anau. From there you can set out to explore the wider region in all its stunning glory.

Best of Te Anau

What to see and do in Te Anau ?

Te Anau is the picturesque base for visitors to set out and explore a wilderness wonderland that was carved out by glaciers thousands of years ago. It’s a place that will inspire you as you marvel at the majesty of this most enthralling part of the world. It’s a must-see on anyone’s travel plans.

Te Anau provides visitors with all the excellent facilities of a resort town while having the added bonus of the most striking views found anywhere around the world, thanks to its position along Lake Te Anau and the enormous backdrops of the beguiling fjords that will captivate and charm you.

Take a boat, plane or walk at your leisure and see the natural wonders of the area – Te Anau is known as the walking capital of the world. The Milford Sound fjord in Fiordland National Park is 15 kilometres of breathtaking scenery. It’s New Zealand’s top tourist attraction and indeed among the world’s leading tourism destinations. Doubtful Sound is the second most popular fjord in the area, followed by Dusky Sound.

A fascinating spectacle is found in the Te Anau glow worm caves. Visitors take a boat to the western shores of Lake Te Anau before going on a guided tour underground and exploring these mesmerising caves. Down there, you’ll see whirlpools and a spectacular underground waterfall – and then the highlight: way down in the caves, visitors are taken by boat to an area where the illuminating residents live on the ceilings, looking for all the world like heavenly constellations in their own right. It’s truly an amazing sight.

Fiordland has another star attraction, only it’s nowhere near the country, or even the planet. The area’s position and clear skies free of smog and light pollution caused by city lights give it a prime advantage when gazing heavenwards at the actual constellations of stars overhead. Go on a night tour and have an experience that’s out of this world.

Go tramping! That’s hiking or rambling to anyone outside of New Zealand. Walk the Milford Track, the most famous and in use for over 150 years. Others include the Routeburn and Kepler Tracks. Make sure you bring a map, which you can get from the local visitors’ centre.

After all that walking and touring around, you’ll be in need of rest and sustenance. There are many good restaurants in Te Anau, and you can sample local food such as lobster and venison.
