What to see and do in Timaru ?

Timaru sits at the doorstep of many inland lakes where sailing, water skiing, boating, windsurfing and fishing are popular summer pastimes. Whether it’s dropping a line from the wharf at Timaru in the hope of hooking a fish, sailing offshore on the sparkling Pacific Ocean, or tramping in nature’s bush-clad hills, there’s something to interest the whole family in a District, which takes pride in its many assets.

Timaru has a relatively dry temperate climate similar to that of neighbouring Ashburton and Christchurch. Temperatures are warm in summer and cold in winter and Timaru is conveniently located within two and a half hours from the famous South Islands snowfields.

Timaru attractions include the South Canterbury Museum, the Timaru Botanic Gardens, and the popular Caroline Bay. The port of Timaru is the most centrally located port in the South Island and a base for many tourism activities.

Visitors have been attracted to the popular sandy beach of Caroline Bay and its iconic summer Caroline Bay Carnival for over a century. The Caroline Bay Carnival features live performances, games, and sideshows and takes place from Boxing Day through to mid-January. The developed beachfront area has scenic lookout points, popular beachfront boardwalks, fun playground areas, paddling pools, a skating rink where all the local kids hang out and numerous picnic spots.

When it’s time to come in from the outdoors, relax at a café, bar or restaurant on the Piazza above the Bay and enjoy stunning views of Caroline Bay and mountains beyond. If you’re thirsty, consider a tour of the local brewery. The DB Mainland Brewery in Sheffield Street offers tours and tasting sessions for the perfect afternoon tipple.

The cities excellent South Canterbury museum has moa-hunter artifacts and all kinds of whaling relics; the art gallery holds the third largest public art collection in the South Island. Timaru has many grand Victorian and Edwardian buildings, constructed from the local volcanic bluestone.

Be sure to check out one of Timaru’s many public gardens and parks. The Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden at Caroline Bay Park is a major feature in the city with more than 1000 romantic blooms set around the garden. The parkland of the Bay area contains a mini golf course, a roller-skating rink, a maze and staging for musical events. To the south of the city centre are the Timaru Botanic Gardens, first laid out in 1864 and to the west is the Centennial Park Reserve, opened in 1940, that includes a tranquil 3.5km walkway following the wooded valley of the Otipua Creek.
