Welcome to Čavle

Čavle, a municipality in the Grobnišće region, represents the northern entrance to the city of Rijeka, and is the ancient centre of the municipality.

Grobnik castle, built on Roman foundations, is one of a series of Frankopan fortress’ that were built from 1225 onwards. Just below the castle there is the plain of Grobnik that has a car racing track, where races are held, as well as a recreational airport.

The winter sports centre of Platak lies to the north, which is a popular ski resort for the inhabitants of Rijeka. On the east side of the plain of Grobnik, which has a legend attached to it about a battle with the Tartars in 1242, there is the baroque Mayer castle from the 17th century. The Church of sv. Filip i Jakov [St. Philip and James], was built in 1105 and is one of the oldest churches in the Grobnik area.

Asides from their rich and famous past, the residents of the municipality of Čavle are very well known for their old, traditional dishes made from local products that you can taste at the Festival of polenta and cheese, as well as in the many restaurants and taverns (potato polenta, local prosciutto, cheese, strudel…).
