A holiday in Turangi offers a range of various outdoor activities, such as bushwalking, white water rafting, kayaking and sight-seeing. Turangi is the perfect base for day-trips into the Tongariro National Park, Kaimanawa Forest Park, Pureroa Forest Park as well as being only a 40 minute drive to the Whakapapa ski area on Mt Ruapehu. With so many great spots for trout fishing and fly fishing, a Turangi holiday is perfect for anyone interested in the great outdoors. The Northern Circuit Walk offers stunning natural scenes sure to delight both the eye and the soul, while several small picturesque settlements are close by.
Many small, charming settlements are close by. Kuratau, Omori, Pukawa and Whareroa are lakeside settlements a short drive off the Western Bays Highway, while other lovely villages from Motuoapa to Hatepe are passed on the highway driving north from Turangi to Taupo. Well worth a visit is historic Tokaanu with its thermal activity pools. These settlements are great for swimming, picnicking, walking and, of course, fishing. There are also hot springs on the Lake edge in Motuapa, perfect for a refreshing winter warm-up.
Turangi also offers a range of spectacular lookouts from which to view the stunning natural landscape. The Waituhi Saddle Lookout offers a spectacular view of the central North Island with excellent picnic spots. The Pihanga Saddle offers another magnificent view, but a little closer to town, while Waihi Hill provides a great view close to the southern end of Lake Taupo.
