Illinois is in the Midwestern region of the United States. Illinois’s eastern border is with Indiana, the southern border is with Kentucky, western border is with Missouri and Iowa. The state’s northern border is with Wisconsin.

Illinois is a good choice

Illinois is often described as a microcosm of the United States and is certainly a state like no other. It is home to the great city of Chicago and has close ties with the illustrious U.S. president Abraham Lincoln. You can visit his home in the state capital of Springfield, as well as his tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Chicago is a world-class city, with stunning architecture, renowned museums and art galleries and endless shopping. Illinois holidays are also home to Route 66, the iconic American road that conjures up images of classic diners and drive-in theatres. Modern motorways are a world away from the experience of this road, and a car or bike trip is highly recommended. The Great Rivers Country in the west of the state is not to be missed and the famous Mississippi River has helped forge the landscape.

Illinois is the perfect choice for families, couples and for those wanting to see a less commercial side to America. The Great Rivers Country is located down the west side of the state and is the perfect place to see wildlife and stunning natural beauty. The traditional American town, Galena, is located in this area. A walk up the towns’ historic Main Street is ideal for boutique shopping, dining and enjoying local festivals. The famous Mississippi River should not be missed when visiting Illinois State.

Head south, to very bottom of Illinois and explore the woodland trails that run through the national parks. The Bald Knob Cross, a large cross symbolising faith, is surrounded by the Shawnee National Forest. This national monument can be seen for thousands of miles across southern Illinois.

Springfield is the state capital of Illinois and was the home of former president Abraham Lincoln. Discover the success of this former president, at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Visit the Oak Ridge Cemetery, home to the famous Lincoln Tomb, his final resting place. Step back in time and experience Illinois in the 1830’s at the New Salem State Historic Site. This reconstructed town will give you an entertaining, yet educating experience of how Lincoln spent his early adulthood.

Whilst Chicago is undoubtedly the most famous destination in Illinois, it is by no means the only reason to visit the state. There are four regions in total, each offering their own adventures. Those looking to experience true Americana can take a drive along the legendary Route 66. Chicago is the starting point of this famous highway and it continues through several states to its finishing point on the west coast. Though multi-lane motorways have diverted plenty of traffic away from this historic route, it is still filled with diners and drive-in movie theatres. Definitely a must see for anyone wishing to experience classic American style.
