About Michigan

Some of the most picturesque places in the United States reside in the serene surroundings found only in Michigan. This amazing destination has incredible lakes, calming forests, and urban, modern cities fit for any kind of visitor. Michigan holidays can be incredibly diverse and feature a large variety of activities to choose from.

Michigan is considered part of the Midwestern United States, but is located more in the northeast of the country, very close to Illinois, Wisconsin, and even Toronto in Canada. Being made up of two peninsulas, bordering Canada, and close to four of the five Great Lakes, this is a stunningly unique holiday destination.

When considering a Michigan holiday, there are a variety of different areas in which guests can stop and rest. Detroit is the largest city in the state, and a bustling metropolis filled with fantastic choices in accommodation. Situated on Lake St. Clair in the east, Detroit is a highly recommendable location. For those looking for a slightly calmer urban experience, Lansing, the capital city, is very charming and relaxed. Finally, to the west, Grand Rapids, the state’s second largest city, is one of the top United States travel destinations, with museums, art galleries and great food. This city is a wonderful launching point to explore the vast expanses of wilderness to the north as well.

When visiting Michigan, it may be hard to leave buzzing social scenes of Detroit and Grand Rapids, filled with iconic attractions, fantastic cuisine, and great atmospheres. However, enjoying adventures out to the many lakes and national parks, as well as appreciating the quieter cultural destinations, is well worth your time.

While there are bigger cities in Michigan, Grand Rapids is without a doubt one of the hottest cultural cities in all of the United States. In 2014, Lonely Planet voted Grand Rapids the top travel destination in the country, and it’s not hard to see why. With a vibrant downtown area, coupled with its close proximity to the marvellous Lake Michigan, there is so much to do in this city. There are museums, historical attractions, and incredible food. The buzzing community in this city know how to show visitors a good time.

However, Grand Rapids isn’t the only great city in Michigan; Detroit is equally superb. Considered the home of the American automotive industry, they have hit hard times of late, but the city is still full of unique and important destinations to visit. It is a great experience for visitors to the region. Looking away from the hustle and bustle, Ann Arbor, found just to the west of Detroit, is a captivating city known for its alternative take of life. Being home to the University of Michigan, this place is well known for its microbreweries, cultural destinations and numerous annual events.

But the most important part of Michigan is all of the gorgeous nature you can explore. Being surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes means that there are always water-based activities to be enjoyed. Even in the more urban regions of the state, Lake Michigan is never too far away, and visitors can have a relaxing boat ride around its waters. On the northern peninsular, Mackinac Island offers a unique experience away from civilization with plenty of wonderful things to do. On the northern shore, at the very top of the state, the Picture Rocks National Lakeshore has iconic rock formations and abundant wildlife, just perfect for photography.

Michigan has a wonderful mix of incredibly striking wilderness and rich, historic city centres. For holidaymakers young and old, there are a variety of things to do for a marvellous and unique getaway holiday.
