Rhode Island, officially the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, is in the New England region of the United States. Rhode Island is bordered by Connecticut to the west, Massachusetts to the north and east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south via Rhode Island Sound and Block Island Sound. It also shares a small maritime border with New York. Providence is the state capital and most populous city.

Rhode Island is a good choice

Rhode Island is America’s second-most densely populated state and one of the first colonies to declare independence from British rule. It is a great spot to discover early-American history and explore its many bays and harbours. Head to Providence, the state’s capital, to experience Rhode Island nightlife. The city is a college town full of restaurants, bars and a vibrant live music scene.

Rhode Island boasts a large number of seafront towns and villages, which offer a great mixture of traditional culture and modern convenience. Take a boat ride out around the bay, try the local cuisine, or spend your night exploring the casinos of Rhode Island… it’s your choice.
Visit Newport Harbour, to get a real taste of the local culture. This attractive port houses a large number of pleasure boats, and there are some great options here for boat trips and other water sports.
Head to Washington County in the south of the state, and you’ll be able to find a great number of beaches – all of which boast the perfect conditions for swimming and sunbathing, as well as pastimes that range from kite boarding to jet skiing.

To experience part of the state’s 640 kilometres of coastline you must visit the seaside town of Newport. Here you can see huge, over-the-top mansions built by some of America’s wealthiest families. The town has been an American summer destination for decades and has a history of attracting tourists to its grand buildings and pristine beaches.

Stay in Blackstone Valley, a heartland of the American Industrial Revolution. The river winding through the valley is dotted with old mills and factories. Many of them have been converted into holiday homes and the valley is a popular Rhode Island holiday spot. Another option is East Greenwich, on the western shore of Narragansett Bay, close to the beach and historical landmarks. Stay in a quaint bed and breakfast and explore the area’s excellent shopping and café culture.

Head to South County, which is not officially on the map but is the name given to the coast region of the state. There are many local beach side communities where visitors choose to stay on their Rhode Island holiday. Rhode Island is the place to use alternative forms of transport. Explore the region by bike, boat and scooter or discover the area on a walking tour. Many tourists travel to Rhode Island for its beaches and to swim in some of the best ocean in the north-east. Don’t forget to check out the area’s history and old buildings.

For eating and drinking, Providence is the city to visit. Being a college town there is always a party atmosphere and year-round entertainment. Experience classic American cuisine in the city’s dining areas and sample some of the local craft beers. For excellent shopping head Downtown or check out the huge Providence Place Mall. If you want to stay up late and party, head to Broad Street in South Providence.

Take the time to really explore the state’s amazing history. Spend a day exploring your location by foot. There are many free guides that point out some of the oldest and most important buildings in the region. Some of Rhode Island’s best mansions are open to the public and you can pretend you are the legendary Jay Gatsby. The 1974 version of ‘The Great Gatsby’ was filmed in Newport’s grandest mansions.

Try some of Rhode Island’s unique cuisine. Coffee milk is the official drink of the state and can be ordered at nearly every restaurant. If you want to try the seafood, order the region’s famous chowder. You can have it three ways or add ‘quahogs’, or stuffed clams. These can be bought from the many ‘clam shacks’ along the Rhode Island coastline. The area is also known for its excellent Italian cuisine, which can be found in most towns and cities.

Time your visit to coincide with one of the state’s many festivals and head to Newport for folk and jazz music festivals by the water. Rhode Island also hosts an arts festival and acknowledges its pagan history with a summer celebration.
