Uyuni

Uyuni may not be a port city, but it was a distribution center throughout history for the shipment of minerals.  Chile and Argentina both had railway lines that would connected in this community, making it possible for local riches to reach the rest of the world.

Because the railways gave life to this community, the importance of this transportation hub can be found at an antique train cemetery that is just 3 kilometers outside the city. This open-air tour of the old hulks takes you back to times past, letting you experience what the railway industry used to be.

There are numerous antique trains and cars that can be found throughout Uyuni as well. The city itself is quite small, with about 10,000 people in total, so you can enjoy a quiet walking tour of the city to enjoy the trains that have served the community since 1890.

The world’s largest salt flats are also close to the city and share the name Uyuni. The salt flats are more than 10,000 square kilometers in size and crest near the Andes Mountains at over 3,600m above sea level. The flats contain up to 70% of the world’s lithium, but what attracts the eye is the remarkable flatness of the vistas, the clear skies above, and the many hiking opportunities.

The salt flats are home to several different animal species, including flamingos and culpeos, that come out in the morning to obtain fresh water.
