With its centralized location in Chile, Valparaiso is one of the region’s most important seaports. For the visitor, you’ll find the access to the sea provides stunning beaches.  There is a distinct personality that can be found in this city that isn’t found anywhere else as well.

For the last half of the 20^th century, Valparaiso slowly degraded toward ruin. Preservation attempts, working side by side with local artists, have created a fusion of graffiti art, historical buildings, and colorful homes that presents a festive atmosphere.

Several celebrations are held throughout the year to celebrate this fusion as well. Jazz and opera festivals, some held by the sea, create unique opportunities to explore. On the final 3 days of the year, Valparaiso hosts a festival that is called “New Year’s by the Sea.” It is the largest fireworks display in South America and runs north and south of the city.

Some of the beaches in the area can be quite rugged, so a lazy afternoon on the sand at Los Torpederas is often going to be your best option. You’ll still find steep cliffs and a sometimes turbulent ocean, but it’s also quiet and the sunshine is consistent. You’ll also be close to any shopping or dining that you may wish to do afterward.

Valparaiso may have seen an era of decline, but the city is rebounding to reclaim its prior glory. Visit the Arco Britanico, see the Biblioteca Santiago Severin, and the view the many facades in the historic sector and you’ll see the love that everyone has for their city. You’ll find that love rubs off on you too.
