You can find Vlora along the coast of Albania and it is a city that has great historical significance. It’s where the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed in 1912 and it has even served as the capital of the nation for a short time. The city itself has deep roots in history, originally being founded as a Greek colony in the 6th century BC. It has been inhabited for 26 centuries, making it one of the oldest continually settled cities in the world today.
What is lovely about Vlora is that the community is surrounded by many olive groves and beautiful gardens. There are neighboring oak forests that lend to a sense of adventure and the sense of history here can be felt with every footstep. It has been a place of peace and of protest, but one thing has always remained consistent: the opening arms of this community. If your plans have you visiting Vlora sometime soon, then here are a few ideas to help you make the most out of your journey through this incredible city.
What Is the Best Way To Enjoy Vlora’s Sunny Shores?
Vlora is right where the Adriatic Sea meets the Ionian Sea and there are many sunny days to enjoy. That means most days are a good opportunity to explore the Sheshi i Flamurit, or Flag Square. It’s where the Independence Monument stands tall and proud with a flag bearer hosting a double-headed eagle toward the sunshine. It’s a great place to explore and find what you may need, but beware that it can be breezy and it can be extremely warm depending on the season. You’ll want to dress appropriately.
Because independence is the foundation of Vlora, a stop at the National Museum of Independence only makes sense. You’ll find this museum down by the harbor and its in the villa that was where the first government of Albania was housed. It was a short-lived government, but one that is fondly remembered because of what it was able to accomplish. There’s a small admission price and be aware that the museum is closed on Mondays.
The Historical Museum is also a beautiful tour to enjoy if you’re looking to beat the heat or escape a few raindrops. You’ll find it just off of the main square and it’s been recently renovated to add to the ambience of the experience. There are a number of relics that are on display which date back to the Bronze Age and there are several Roman artifacts as well. If you’re going there to learn about each item, however, you might come away disappointed because there is much information available for each item. They’re only open from 8-2 on Tuesday-Thursday during the Summer as well.
Experience Outdoor Dining At Its Finest!
When you get hungry for something great, then one of your best options in Vlora is the Piceri Amantia. You’ve got a lot of great pizza options on the menu, plus other standard Italian fare with an Alabanian twist here and there, that you can enjoy outdoors in a beautiful terraced dining space. We recommend purchasing a couple of their smaller pizzas to try and the generous toppings will leave you with a satisfied smile with every bite.
Seafood is part of the daily routine in Vlora and with the waters so close and the fishing so fresh, many of the restaurants here focus on this cuisine. For a taste that is local and fresh, we recommend a visit to Pulebardha, which is one of the worst kept secrets that there is in Vlora. The seafood is well treated in this small place that is off of the main street and there are some antipasta options that are pretty incredible. Service can sometimes be hit or miss, but the house chardonnay helps to wash the worries away.
How About a Beautiful Adventure While In Vlora?
If you want to get off of the water and out of the city for just a bit, then it’s the perfect time to go explore Kanine Castle. The ruins of the castle are surprisingly larger than what you’d expect, but there are several walls and gates that are still standing. It’s a bit disappointing in some ways because there will likely be some trash floating around, but the vistas that you see from the top are pretty incredible. There are some small stores and restaurants to enjoy up there as well and it will definitely be worth the trip. Plan for a sunset trip for some amazing pictures!
The Zvernec Monastery is also a peaceful day trip to enjoy if you don’t mind a trip out to the island. An expansive boardwalk has been built over the water for convenient access to the monastery and the island itself, though small, is fun to explore. There aren’t many beach areas, but there is plenty of forest canopy to enjoy. It isn’t always open, however, so plan accordingly.
While you’re staying in Vlora, there is always a good day to enjoy the waterfront. You can rent a boat to go out into the sea for a relaxing afternoon on the waves if you wish or if you want more of an adventure, go out with a local fisherman to reel in something fantastic on a beautiful day. The views from the water are beyond compare and you’ll be able to complete the views of Vlora from above and from the water.
Are You Ready To Explore Vlora Today?
This beautiful Albanian city might not offer some of the modern luxuries that a seaside resort town might provide, but that doesn’t make a visit to this city any less special. There’s always something new to do, interesting to see, or a place to explore. From the shore to the summit, enjoy your time away in this community and you will not be disappointed with the investment that you’ve spent in your holiday.
