Waya Island, on the southern part of the Yasawa Island archipelago is as large as Viwa Island. It is known for its stunning sunsets throughout the year. Although not as popular as some other Fiji destinations, the beauty of Waya Island is that it is so secluded. Being 171 kilometres from Suva, Waya Island has a flight link from Nausori Airport, the main one. There are approximately two airlines that depart from the airport. They fly consistently to Waya during the daytime. You can take a transfer direct to the resort every day on ‘The Magic’, a boat carrying daily visitors to Waya Island.
Waya Island is one of the more low-key large islands in the Yasawa Island Group. The resorts are perhaps simpler in design but the accommodation is also extremely conducive to being distracted by the sunsets, the relaxation, hiking and engagement with the local Fijians. Travellers to this island tend to leave happy, those who seek simple, comfortable and beachside secluded ambience. This is a community who are warm, genuinely friendly like the Fijian islanders, but also you have the opportunity to become part of their culture which is easy going and rather cool. Spend a night in front of a bonfire on the beach, or learn a customary Fijian dance. Be involved in a Kava ceremony or just kick back and relax on the beach and greet locals as they walk by.
Reports from travellers show that Waya Island is one of Fiji’s best hiking and walking track spots. The lush tropical forests undulate almost down to the sea while the hinterland is rugged and scenic.
Waya Island also offers more of the coral reef formations below crystal clear aqua-blue sea. Scuba diving is very popular here as is fishing for lobster and crab.
