Italy, Lake Garda from above
Two thousand years’ worth of vacation-goers can’t be wrong. With its therapeutic thermal springs, world-famous vineyards and stunning natural scenery, Lake Garda has been a favorite retreat destination since the days before the Caesars. You can see the incredible buildings these first visitors left behind in the towns and areas surrounding the lake, as well as some incredible medieval and renaissance structures. Past and present combine on a Lake Garda vacation, and you’ll be able to split your time between exploring the local history, enjoying the regional food and wine, and just relaxing on the shores of the sparkling lake.
A Lake Garda vacation isn’t a vacation to your typical waterside resort. Although there are plenty of luxurious villas and hotels you can stay it right near the lake itself, the beautiful towns and fishing villages that dot its coastline are also wonderful options. Sirmione is home to the famous thermal spas that have attracted visitors to the region since ancient times. You can still see the impressive remains of the Roman poet Catullus’s villa in the town. The medieval town of Salò overlooking the lake is brimming with historical treasures, and is a favorite among visitors.
Take advantage of the sparkling waters and sunshine on your Lake Garda vacation and spend some time in the outdoors. You can swim, surf, and windsurf on the lake, or just relax on the shore and work on your tan.
The area around the lake is also famous for its natural thermal springs and spas. After a day of water sports and swimming you can relax at the Sirmione Spas, some of the most famous in Europe. Located in the picturesque village bordering the lake, these sulfur springs have legendary healing properties that have been attracting visitors for centuries. Catullus, the famous Roman poet who lived in the first century BC, had a villa here, and you can still visit the Grottos of Catullus to see the amazingly well-preserved ruins of a Roman bath.
While you’re in Sirmione be sure to visit Scaliger castle, an impressive medieval fortification that has been watching over the lake since the 13th century. If you really want to immerse yourself in the past, take a trip to Canale di Tenno. This lovely medieval village was recently voted one of the most beautiful in Italy, which isn’t surprising given its stunning architecture and fantastic views of the lake and mountains.
The exciting re-enactments at Medieval Times might be a better option for families with children who want to experience living history. The colorful jousts between brave knights atop charging steeds accompanied by a sumptuous banquet are sure to delight visitors of all ages. If the kids want a break from history altogether you can take them to Gardaland, Italy’s first amusement park. The over 40 rides you can choose from range from high-speed adrenaline rushes to tamer children’s rides, and if you’d rather keep your feet firmly on the ground there are dozens of other shows and activities you can enjoy.
Fun for the whole family awaits along the shores of the lake, book your vacation to Lake Garda today and see what a real Italian escape is all about.
