City A - Z
This tiny country, located between Germany, Belgium, and France, has two primary regions. It’s the world’s only remaining grand duchy and has the world’s second highest per capita GDP.
It’s central location has made it an important location since Roman times and was initially founded as a fortress. It’s also had an extensive Frankish castle during the Middle Ages and it was also a bastion on the Spanish Road that was used for about 50 years during the Renaissance period.
Many people who travel to this tiny nation come to the city that holds the same name as the country. If you’re planning a visit here soon, then here are some of the essentials to consider seeing during your stay.
The American Cemetery and Memorial Is Touching
Over 5,000 American soldiers were buried in Luxembourg, victims of the Battle of the Bulge which was fought over the winter of 1944-45. It’s also where General George S. Patton is buried and each plot is accompanied by white crosses in a semi-circular fashion. Two flagpoles overlook the area and there are 22 places where brothers are buried side-by-side in this cemetery that has been administered without taxation since 1951.
For an interesting contrast, you might also wish to visit the Sandweiler German war cemetery, which is just a short walk away. This is where German soldiers from the same battle are buried, although there were twice as many German soldiers killed and in contrast to the stark white crossed of the American memorial, these sites are marked with dark stone crosses. It is also notable because over 800 soldiers who are buried here are unknown.
The Only Cathedral In Luxembourg Is Breathtaking
Featuring many examples of late Gothic architecture, the cornerstone for this cathedral was laid in 1613 and it was initially a Jesuit church. There are a number of Renaissance adornments and elements to this cathedral as well and many in the Catholic faith know of the church because of the image of Maria Consolatrix Afflictorum that appeared in the 18th century.
A journey to the Grand Ducal Palace is also a popular trip to make and for good reason. It’s the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg and the building itself has been used since 1572. A guard stands out front and if you’re sneaky about it, you can certainly take his picture as you take a look at the amazing craftsmanship that went into the building.
For an amazing view, you simply must make your way to the Adolphe Bridge. It’s the perfect picture opportunity in any season, although the Autumn colors are simply spectacular! These and more are all awaiting you when you make your way to the small independent nation. Take in the splendor and see for yourself just how magnificent it can be!
