Located in Southern Mexico, the state of Oaxaca offers visitors a significant amount of coastline to explore along the Pacific Ocean. It is a place where the traditions of the Mixtecs and Zapotecs have fused with modern Mexican life, creating a unique resort atmosphere where native crafts and culture mix with developed sandy beaches and opportunities to relax.
Many who make their way to Oaxaca will find themselves staying in and around La Cruceita. As a resort area, it is known as Huatulco. The Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains stretch upwards as the waves of the Pacific Ocean come toward you, making it an excellent opportunity to explore.
Access to the area is somewhat limited, so the coastlines are rugged outside of the developed resort areas, making it a dream destination for backpackers. For an extended stay, considering backpacking from Huatulco to Puerto Escondido via Zipolite and Mazunte.
You’ll also find the Bocana del Rio Copalita in Oaxaca, situated about 10 kilometers from the bays that provide such beautiful beaches. Several landmarks are on the site, including a main temple, a ball court, and a minor temple dedicated to a serpent god. Coffee plantations from before the area was developed into a resort destination continue to thrive in the area as well.
