San Miguel de Allende is an interesting story of two extremes. At the beginning of the 20th century, it almost became a ghost town.

With its Baroque and Neo-classical influences, artists discovered this community and turned it into a booming colony for the arts. It was once a headquarters for Mexican agriculture and industry. Now it is a booming resort destination, even though it isn’t a coastal community.

Visiting San Miguel de Allende begins with its historic city center. Numerous buildings from the 17th century fill the area, earning it a world heritage site designation in 2008. El Chorro is the oldest neighborhood in the city and is the home of the magnificent Parish of San Miguel. Additional churches in town with importance include Tercera Orden, San Juan de Dios, and Santo Domingo.

South of the city center is Juarez Park. It was established during the era when many were fleeing this community, but one wouldn’t know it by the amenities that are offered. Playgrounds are available for kids, with old bridges and walking paths offered in abundance. Decorative pools, fountains, and wrought iron benches add some flavor to the atmosphere.

Another important stop in San Miguel de Allende is the Mercado de Artesanias. This is where the local artists sell their wares. You’ll find everything from blown glass to spun wool in the various booths. Just in front of the artist market is the main produce market for the city as well.

San Miguel de Allende is a beautiful city that seems to offer a new surprise around every corner. Come here and you will find something that is amazing and unique.
