Why You Should Visit Santo Domingo

If you wish to visit the Dominican Republic, then there’s a good chance that your journey will take you to Santo Domingo. It is the largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean and serves as the capital and industrial center for the nation. It was founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus along the eastern bank of the Ozama River, then moved to the other side of the river six years later.

The colonial zone of the city is a world heritage site, protecting Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the region.

One could spend an entire holiday exploring the colonial zone and its examples of 15th century architecture. Be sure to visit Ozama Fort, the Cathedral, and the Alcazar de Colon at the very least.

You’ll also want to take a stroll along the Malecon. The waterfront location will take you past many of the city’s best clubs, cafés, and restaurants. There are several large casino complexes along the way as well.

For those who want to do more than enjoy the beaches of Santo Domingo, try an adventure into the Parque Mirador Sur. The parklands overlook the coast and is closed to vehicles every evening. You’ll find families gathering here to enjoy sunsets every night. The Botanical Garden of the city is also quite impressive, with numerous ecosystems to enjoy.

You’ll find life is very active in Santo Domingo all day and all evening long. That means you can choose whatever adventure suits you the most. Come for the sunshine, enjoy the waves, and let your stress melt away.
