What to see and do in Windsor ?

If you’re looking for a taste of British royalty during your visit to England, Windsor is a top choice. Windsor Castle dates back to the 11th century and is the preferred residence of the Queen. Windsor, in the county of Berkshire, is only 35 km from central London, and so it’s easy to get to if you’re flying into any of London’s major international airports. A Windsor holiday is a wondrous step back into glorious past in a charming English town.

There’s a wide array of Windsor accommodation for you to choose from for your stay in this historic city with close ties to the British royal family. Depending on where you want to be in Windsor, there’s any number of excellent hotels. In the central areas, popular with many first-time visitors to the town, there’s around half a dozen hotels while a couple of hotels are located on the outskirts of Windsor and still more outside the town. Visitors can also stay at a huge number of bed and breakfasts all over Windsor and its surroundings, and be assured of the warmest of welcomes.

Windsor is home to the world’s largest permanently lived-in castle and is a stunning location for an English holiday, with a wide range of attractions and sights. It’s within easy reach of the central tourist areas of London, making it an excellent place to base yourself during your stay in England.

Overshadowing Windsor is its royal residence, and every visitor wants a peek inside. Luckily, they can get one, but not always. The Royal Family often spends the weekends at Windsor Castle as well as during certain periods of the year, such as Easter and June, for ceremonial duties and racing at the nearby Ascot Racecourse. The castle is closed to visitors on certain dates during these months but otherwise is open around the year and you can have a good look around the sumptuous rooms.

If you’re on holiday with children, they’ll go wild at Legoland Windsor Resort. It’s a theme park based on the popular Lego brick toy, the design of which its many rides and models are fashioned upon. It’s one of the most popular theme parks in the United Kingdom and attracts around 2 million people a year.

Go racing at Ascot Racecourse, one of England’s most famous and only 11 kilometres from Windsor. There are race days throughout the year and you might spot the Royal Family among the punters during the Royal Ascot festival in June. Place a few bets and you never know – you might end up extending your holiday in this magical kingdom!

Spend time getting to know Windsor and its sights and sounds, and people, by casually strolling through the town and taking it all in. Windsor has some wonderful pubs that shouldn’t be missed; stop off at a few and sample the local brews.

For an unforgettable night out, book tickets at the Theatre Royal, just beside the castle. It’s one of the leading theatres in the country and stages amazing productions as well as having an intimate cinema in an Edwardian auditorium.
