Stunning mountains, unspoiled by mass tourism; the Yasawa Islands comprise 20 ancient, volcanic islands with comparatively little commercial development and a rugged, untouched atmosphere. Though only a short, three-hour catamaran ride from Fiji’s mainland hub of Nadi, there are no shops, banks or restaurants anywhere on the archipelago, so a visit to one of the Yasawa Islands is the epitome of a Fijian holiday: a true break from reality. With a mix of accommodation options, most of which are locally owned and run to the benefit of the local communities, there is something for everyone here. Visitors to these unspoiled beauties come for an authentic Fijian experience – and they’re never disappointed.
Whatever you crave in a beach holiday destination, this place has it. Yasawa Islands accommodation ranges from luxury waterfront bures (traditional wooden huts) and secluded eco resorts to dorm-style backpackers complete with pulsating nightlife. Even if your budget won’t allow for in-room massages and five-star food, many Yasawa Islands accommodation options offer private bures for a fraction of the cost of the fancy resorts. But no matter what your budget, digging your toes into the bone-white sand and plunging into those crystal Fijian waters is a world-class experience – and it’s free.

What to see and do in Yasawa Island ?
The Yasawa Island are all about incredible, unspoiled natural beauty and the outdoors. The perfect tropical holiday awaits you somewhere in this archipelago, whether your idea of perfection is lazing on white sand or getting active and going sailing, hiking or paddling. Get exploring and make these islands your next holiday destination.
When you come to the Yasawa Islands, nobody could blame you for sitting back and soaking up the picturesque surrounds. But there’s more to this place than your typical tropical island holiday. Pull on some shoes and go for a walk to see the impressive volcanoes up close. The most rewarding time to go is early morning, when you can climb to the top of a mountain to see the sunrise. The walking trails are clearly marked and easy enough if you have a decent fitness level. Guided or not, you’ll find your way around and see some beautiful scenery while you’re at it.
Get spooked and dip your toes in surprisingly icy water (for Fiji) at the Sawa-I-Lau caves. The locals will tell you about the spiritual significance of the caves as well as the eerie ghost stories that have been circulating about the caves in more recent times.
All the usual Fijian water activities of snorkelling, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding are on offer of course, and the waters surrounding the Kasawas are excellent for sailing. A day on a catamaran will be enough to make your ‘real life’ seem like just the opposite. Enjoy cultural visits to local communities where you’ll get to see the beautiful Meke (traditional dancing), try the delicious Lovo (a smoky campfire barbeque feast) and participate in one of the famed Kava ceremonies.
A Fijian cooking class is a great way to take something more than photos and sunburn home with you, and impress your friends with your newfound skills. Fijian food is a unique mix of tropical, South Pacific flavours with a heavy emphasis on fresh seafood.
Swimming with manta rays is an unforgettable experience, though the mantas aren’t permanent residents of the Yasawas so you’ll have to choose your timing carefully.
